Mastering the Art of Job Hunting: Beating Application Overwhelm

Applying for jobs can feel daunting. A quality application can take time and if you are currently out of work this can lead to an enormous sense of pressure and before long you are scrolling job search sites at midnight. Remember to pace yourself. Provide some structure and boundaries to the way you approach your job search and applications. Some practical ideas to help are;

· Set a goal of how many positions you want to apply for each week and space this out eg. If you have set the goal of applying for 6 jobs a week, apply for 2 a day on Monday,Wednesday and Friday. Breaking it down into manageable chunks is more sustainable and achievable. Tip: Check the date the applications need to be in to ensure you don’t miss the deadline!

· Schedule the time of day you will work on your applications- are you at your most productive first thing in the morning? Once done you can allow yourself to go about the rest of the day knowing you have achieved your goal. Treat it like a part time job and schedule job search shifts to your week.

· If you find yourself time poor but want to keep your eye on jobs coming up ensure you have downloaded the seek and trademe apps to your phone. That way, if you find yourself with a spare 5 minutes you can check in on new listings and save these to apply for later. When you get a chunk of time to apply for positions you have already created your short list.
